Today we sat down with Olivia Rose (or Rose as she goes by day to day!) to learn more about how she got into the creative world and where she takes inspiration from. You might recognize her from her extensive collection of amazing Sizzix dies featuring cute, pretty and nature inspiration designs.
What do you do?
I design dies, stamps and multi-level embossing folders for Sizzix, as well as writing blog content, researching current trends and planning future, exciting product releases.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Every day is different, I can be sketching concepts for an Easter die set one day, and be knee-deep in excel spreadsheets the next!
How did you get into the creative world?
I have very artistic and creative parents so I take after them! I did a Fine Art degree and I taught knitting and crochet techniques for my first job. I’ve been making and designing things for as long as I remember.
What is your favourite making type and why? Is there a make you’ve made that you’re really proud of?
Anything to do with paint is my first love, so I like mixed media – building up layers and combining colours and textures to create something unique.
What is your favourite product from the Sizzix Product range and why?
I’ve always liked the Paper Sculpting Kit (#662225), there’s something really special about bringing die-cut flowers and foliage to life!
What’s your favorite current making trend?
I love seeing the more illustrative styles coming through, with hand-drawn florals and watercolour effects being really popular. As someone who hasn’t used a ruler since school, I’m loving the freedom of it!
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I spend a lot of time in my garden or going on walks, so florals and foliage are always inspiring. But I also love seeing what wildlife I can incorporate into my designs, like birds, bunnies and butterflies. I think they can bring such character and energy to a make. I also read a lot of fantasy books which always inspire me to be creative with my thinking.
What’s your favorite die design you’ve created so far and why?
That’s a close tie between Joy Riders (#665888) and Make Waves (#665314). Both of them were so much fun to draw and develop, and hopefully they’ll make people smile as they’re using them!
