Introducing our new video series showcasing the committed team at Ellison Europe! We wanted to give an insight into our work life here, with employees from across the business talking about the key industry trends that effect their role.
Each month we will have a different member of the team interviewed about some of the latest topics in the industry, trends they have recognised in their area of work and their day-to-day work life here at Ellison. This month we’ve interviewed Social Media Coordinator Charlie Bull on the latest social media trends, and next month, we will feature Marketing Manager Jessica Sharkey who talks about the latest Digital Marketing trends and strategies.
Here’s the full interview with Charlie Bull:
- How did you start your career in social media?
“I started around 7 years ago during my Masters course. Like most universities, we were having an annual sports varsity event. In previous years, the university didn’t do any media coverage of the event, so I thought it was a good time to start. I messaged someone at our Student Union and from there we planned coverage of the whole event. I was one of the main members of the social media team and my career has progressed from there.”
- What do you think are the latest trends in social media?
“Social media is a constantly changing world, so it’s hard to predict the latest trends. However, I would say that creating content that triggers a positive emotional response from your audience is best practice. Trends also change depending what your brand is and who your target market are, and data and insights is really the only way that you’re going to stay on top of them.”
- Why is it so important to keep up to date with trends and new releases on social media platforms?
“They can really dictate how well your content performs and, in some cases, can change your whole strategy entirely. For example, Facebook’s recent algorithm change to support more family and friend-based content. With that update came the decrease of organic reach for brands and we’ve had to adjust to cater for that. It also allows us to stay ahead of the curve!”
- How influential will social media be for the future of Sizzix?
“I think social may start to inform what Sizzix do, not just from a marketing standpoint, but also across the whole business. Target markets engage with brands on social more than ever before and that information and data can inform us from a product, sales and marketing point of view.”
- What do you think the key differences are between a successful and unsuccessful social platform?
“I believe this is mainly down to how your content engages your audience. Campaigns should be about creating meaningful discussion and a sense of community. Gone are the days of shouting about yourselves and expecting your target market to listen.”
- What’s the mostinteresting social media campaign you’ve seen or been a part of?
“We’ve come up with so many different campaign ideas here, from ones involving full wax works to our #MakingThePledge and Sizzix Winter Sports. But I would say my favourite campaign is when we attempted to break the world record for the Largest Collection of Papercrafts.”
- Do you use social media much in your personal life?
“I’m not actually a huge social media user in my personal life. I spend all my working day on these platforms and researching everything about them, so it’s the last thing I want to do when I get home. However, I do like to use Instagram for all my family adventure pictures.”
- What does your usual working day consist of?
“A lot of people think it’s just about posting a pretty picture on Facebook, but there’s so much more that goes into it! The reporting, analysing and researching is what makes up the majority of my time and the content is the result of the hard work that goes into it.”
- What is your favourite aspect of your job?
“I would say it’s seeing a campaign or piece of content really resonate with our audience. With the amount of reporting and researching that we put into our content, it’s a really great feeling when it all pays off and our audience is enjoying what we are putting out.
- Do you have a favourite social network to use?
“Instagram would be my favourite. The visual nature of the platform makes a really nice and fun platform to work with. With the addition of Instagram Stories, it increases our content possibilities even further and gives another avenue to communicate with our audience.”
