Be Kind to Yourself
Don’t overwork yourself. To switch off after work it is vital you separate your down time from your work. It can be hard to not be tempted to have a quick check of your work emails in the evenings and see what may be in store for you in the day ahead, however this will only spiral your stress back into work mode. Instead log out of your emails when you leave work, creating a barrier between your work and private life.
Remember, you can only do so much in a day, so accept you may not have been able to conquer everything you wanted, but there’s always tomorrow. If unfinished tasks make you feel unable to leave the office, simply make a list of tasks to prioritise tomorrow which you can pick up in the morning. This will leave you comfortable in the knowledge that you won’t forget anything important and that you will be able to pick up where you left off tomorrow.
Exercising after a long and hard day at work may appear to be a chore to some, however improving your fitness levels have so many benefits that will improve your everyday life, which soon will make it your favourite part of the day. Many find that exercise gives them the opportunity to release their frustrations and gives them time to think, leaving them with a clear head. Exercising also boosts endorphins which will leave you in a good mood to complete the rest of your evening care free with a fresh perspective.
Cooking fresh meals is a great way of focusing on the task at hand and producing something you can enjoy, leaving you feeling productive and accomplished. Healthy meals will make you feel better in yourself, so try and include lots of fresh ingredients.
Don’t be tempted to reach for alcohol with your meal, as although many think it helps them relax, alcohol is actually found to cause you to feel anxiety. Instead opt for a healthier alternative such as a glass of fruit infused water, leaving you feel in control and increasing feelings of wellbeing.
Take Up Journaling
Screens keep you awake and alert, which can cause havoc for your sleep. Instead, take part in a digital detox at night, removing all screens from your evening routine.
Replacing screens with writing entries in a journal every night can be the perfect way to unwind and write down your thoughts and feelings from your day. Noting down what you are grateful for is also a useful way of training yourself to think positively before sleeping, helping you to have a peaceful night.
Journaling doesn’t have to mean just writing. Creating visual journal pages are an extremely popular meditative activity which can be seen all across Pinterest and Instagram. Making your journal more visual will make you more likely to want to continue using your journal, as well as revisiting old pages to look back on your thoughts and memories.
Receive the Benefits of Aromatherapy
Scents such as lavender, chamomile, sandalwood and rose are all well known for their relaxing and sleep-inducing properties. To ramp up the relaxation, some simple meditation or yoga is a great way of refocusing your mind and unwinding. If yoga isn’t your thing, then following some deep breathing techniques whilst using an aromatherapy diffuser will leave you in deep relaxation ready to drift asleep.
